Public policy analysis is a brand-new interdisciplinary and applied research field emerging after the Second World War. Since the 1970s, it has become a new course field in the field of public administration. Huazhong University of Science and Technology is one of the earliest universities in China to create a total of professional subjects related to public management disciplines. It has the right to grant master's and doctoral degrees in the first-level subjects of public administration. Since 2001, the public policy analysis has covered undergraduate, master, doctoral, and other educational levels as a basic professional course for undergraduates and a compulsory course for graduate students. The school has established public policy and public policy analysis courses for undergraduates and postgraduates each year. It is usually started in the fall.

The undergraduate’s public policy courses take 32 hours, and the class size is about 90 students. The courses face with whole school students and offered in both English and Chinese. In addition, this course is offered for students of seven joint-degree dual degree students.

The postgraduate’s public policy analysis courses take 32 hours, with a class size of about 70 students. It faces with postgraduates in the whole university.The foreign students who are good at Chinese also take part in this course. And it generally started in the autumn. The course is also opened for MPA graduate studentsin the spring and autumn, with a class size of 40 students. The special courses for public policy generally be set up for doctoral studentsin the spring. The class size will be around 15 people and takes about 32 hours .

Since the2008, Public Policy Analysis Courses are offered to foreign students in autumn every year. The size of this class is about 8-32 students and will took around 32 hours. Each fall, the Frontier of Public Administration & public policy courses are offered for doctoral students, with the size of 3-10 students and take 32 hours.

Public policy analysis courses focuses on policy systems and policy processes. It not only studies and teaches the nature, causes, and outcomes of policies but also concentrates on theoretical research and content analysis. It also studies and teaches policy systems and policy processes (including policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation), and pay attention to system process analysis. At present, the course group has formed a excellent teaching system and has created a team of teachers who are advanced in unity. The structure of the teaching staff, age, and academic background is reasonable. After ten years of hard work, the public policy analysis course of the School of Public Administration has achieved breakthrough development and has been widely recognized by teachers, students, and academic authorities.

In 2011, The "Public Policy Analysis" course was approved by the Huazhong University of Science and Technology University as Brand Course. In 2013, it was granted the “Brand Course for Foreign Students to Study in China” at the provincial level in Hubei Province.; In 2017, it was granted the " Brand Course for Foreign Students to Study in China for the second phase" at the national level.
